Torre a Mare is a small fishing village, enclosing its essence around the marina; here we can find a wide range of bars, restaurants, pizzerias and also typical places that work in perfect harmony with the territory. The old town, really modest in its size, is spread around a sixteenth-century isolated tower that stands in the middle of a large square appearing at the port. The latter is equipped for both fishing and pleasure boats. In the small piazza Mar de Plata there is the monument to the fisherman by Mario Piergiovanni, it’s a statue of Neptune spearing with his pitchfork a giant octopus. This monument was placed in 2002 and it incorporates a previous statue illustrating the same theme entitled La Fendàne du Pescatòre made by Tommaso Piscitelli in 1925 and it was removed during world war II as a result of war necessities. More than that, it’s said that touching one of the octopus tentacles bodes well for women who desire to become pregnant.
